What is pediatric eye care?

Modern Optometry offers a range of pediatric eye services that address the unique vision needs, and challenges children face as they grow.

Dr. Verna provides comprehensive pediatric eye care services for children five and up. She specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of childhood eye conditions and diseases, including:

  • Myopia
  • Astigmatism
  • Eye misalignments
  • Lazy eye (amblyopia)

Dr. Verna customizes care plans to treat existing eye conditions and provides a variety of options for pediatric glasses and contacts.

When should I schedule a pediatric eye care appointment?

Experts recommend that you schedule a pediatric eye exam at Modern Optometry before your child begins kindergarten.

Your child may also need a pediatric eye evaluation if they show signs of myopia (nearsightedness), a refractive error that causes objects at a distance to appear out of focus and blurry. Signs of myopia in children can include:

  • Squinting
  • Academic difficulties
  • Holding books close to the face
  • Sitting close to a television or computer
  • Disinterest in sports, and other activities that require clear vision

Myopia often starts in childhood and can be hereditary. Without treatment, the condition can progress and increase your child’s risk for cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachment, and other chronic eye conditions.

What happens during a pediatric eye care appointment?

During your child’s initial pediatric eye appointment, Dr. Verna reviews their personal and family medical histories. She also completes visual acuity tests and a comprehensive eye exam.

If your child has any eye health issues, Dr. Verna customizes a treatment plan to manage it. She can prescribe glasses or contact lenses to improve your child’s vision.

MYOPIA CONTROL

Modern Optometry also offers a variety of treatment options for myopia control in children, including:

MiSight®

MiSight is the first and only FDA-approved soft contact lens to slow myopia progression in children aged 8-12. The lens works by minimizing the elongation of the eye to protect distance vision.

Paragon CRT® lenses

Paragon CRT lenses are contacts your child wears overnight to correct the curvature of the cornea. After removing the lenses in the morning, your child enjoys improved vision throughout the day.

Abiliti™ lens

Acuvue® Abiliti lenses are disposable soft contacts that slow the progression of myopia in children and improve their overall visual acuity.

Dr. Verna can also prescribe bifocal or progressive lenses to correct refractive errors, so your child can see clearly at all distances.
